WELCOME TO CROSSFIT THUNDER HILL

About

CrossFit Thunder Hill started the old fashion way, as a garage gym. In 2009, co-owner John Wallen became bored of the typical workout routine at the YMCA and stumbled across this crazy fitness program called CrossFit. He began following the CrossFit.com workouts in his garage and became hooked. John earned his CF-L1 designation in 2010 where he met Rob Miller, owner of CrossFit Delaware Valley. In 2011, John realized that he wanted more coaching and was looking for the “CrossFit community” that everyone was talking about. He joined CrossFit Delaware Valley and immediately loved the coaching and atmosphere. He easily convinced Jill that she had to try it. Jill was extremely nervous attending her first class. But once she experienced the coaching, the support, and the community, she knew this was the fitness program for her. Jill earned her CF-L1 designation in 2012. After over a year of travelling an hour (each way) to CrossFit Delaware Valley we returned to training and began training others in our garage…CrossFit Thunder Hill was born! We had the equipment, the knowledge, the experience and a lot of fun. As more and more people realized the benefits CrossFit, we quickly grew out of our garage. We moved into a larger space in Toughkenamon where we stayed for over a year. Then we found our current location in Oxford! It is a great space that looks “old school CrossFit” and we are happy that we found it!

Our Mission

Our mission is to help our community get “better”! By better we mean – healthier, fitter, more confident, more flexible, stronger, smarter and happier. To do this, we are providing an awesome, supportive and friendly fitness environment where you will achieve things that you never thought you could and you will push yourself to places you never knew existed. You will feel better, you will look better, you will be better!

Coaches

John Wallen

Co-owner and trainer John Wallen began CrossFit training in 2009 after becoming bored with conventional weight training. He began performing main site WODs and instantly became hooked. Wanting to take his training and coaching to the next level, John became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in 2010 (working with instructors, Rob Miller, Todd Widman, EC Synkowski, and Heather and Ben Burgeron) and a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer in 2013. John has trained with many of the best CrossFit and Olympic lifting coaches in the area and brings a wealth of knowledge to our box. John is a huge proponent of proper form in all of our lifts and movements. Accordingly, he is a CrossFit certified judge and was a judge in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 CrossFit Open and the 2013 and 2014 CrossFit Games Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition. John is a frequent Masters Division competitor and has won multiple local CrossFit competitions. When not coaching at CrossFit Thunder Hill, John is an attorney and banker who has worked with over eight different CrossFit boxes in various capacities.

Jill Wallen

Co-owner and trainer Jill Wallen was first introduced to CrossFit by her husband John, in 2009. She officially became a CrossFitter in 2011 when she joined a box. She loved the intensity of the workouts, the ability to use a barbell and the close community feeling. Now years later she is stronger and over 30lbs lighter thanks to CrossFit. Jill became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in 2012 under the direction of great trainers including Rob Miller, Aimee Lyons, Rory Zambard (14th place finisher in the 2013 CrossFit Games) and Adrian Bozman, a member of the CrossFit HQ Staff. John and Jill began training people out of their garage in 2012 and moved into their first location in Toughkenamon in 2013. She enjoys encouraging and helping our athletes to be better and do things they never imagined they could do. Jill is a CrossFit Kids Trainer and is excited to introduce CrossFit to kids. She is looking forward to the opportunity to help shape lives and teaching the importance of fitness. As a trainer and now a box owner, she can truly say CrossFit has completely changed her life for the better.

Lisa Duncan

Lisa was introduced to CrossFit by her husband, Christopher, in October 2011 when they did “Murph” together in their garage. She was very nervous to start CrossFit after doctors told her she would never run again after suffering multiple ankle injuries. Lisa also suffered from chronic migraines. After joining her first CrossFit box in December 2011 she quickly fell in love with the community, constantly varied movements, and the friendly competition. Two and a half years later, CrossFit has been a life changing success story. Lisa has used the functional fitness program to fully overcome her ankle injuries and is now completely migraine free.

In November 2012, Lisa became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. She is constantly honing her coaching skills and is always ready for the next competition. She has competed on the CrossFit Thunder Hill Competition Team in multiple competitions and is always ready for more. She received her CrossFit Mobility Certificate in July 2014.

When not coaching or competing in CrossFit competitions, Lisa is a wife, a mother to three cats and two dogs, and a federal employee. Lisa strongly believes in the sense of community that Thunder Hill offers and couldn’t see coaching elsewhere.

Tony Davis

Tony’s first CrossFit workout was very interesting. It took place in February of 2014 and he got CRUSHED in the WOD by his wife, Lisa. Tony began to give CrossFit a shot as opposed to the typical meathead weightlifting when he signed up for the 2014 open. The community aspect and friendly competition had Tony hooked and he became an athlete that showed up every day. He was nervous at first as he has had two surgeries on each knee and the doctors have told him no squats, deadlifts, running, etc. With the coaching of John and Jill and the support of CFTH, Tony’s numbers in all of these categories are higher than they have ever been and with the proper form, he has no knee issues. After six months of training, Tony participated in his first competition and has recently joined a CFTH team to compete with as well. He became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in August of 2015 and is looking forward to helping many others achieve the results they are looking for.

Outside of CrossFit, Tony is a husband and father of 3 boys (one of which joined CFTH in August of 2015). He is a manager for Wawa, is a middle school leader at Willowdale Chapel, and coaches youth football. Tony loves the family feel of Thunder Hill and is thrilled to be a part of the team and to help spread the excitement that CrossFit provides!

Mike Kane

A runner most of his life, Mike was introduced to CrossFit in 2009 and over the next few years he incorporated main site WODs into his workout routine. Looking for the right affiliate took some time, but as soon as CrossFit Thunder Hill opened in their Toughkenamon location Mike was the first one through the door. As his knowledge and love of CrossFit grew, Mike knew he wanted to coach and became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in February 2014. He received his CrossFit Mobility Certificate in July 2014. Mike believes in setting goals and tracking your performance as you work toward those goals and reminds everyone that health and fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time, but with dedication and persistence, you will succeed!

How to Choose a CrossFit Box

Increasingly these days your choice of CrossFit boxes in our area is becoming more numerous. So how do you decide which CrossFit box is right for you? First, you need to decide what you are looking for…and what your goals are. Are you looking for general fitness, weight loss, increased strength and/or stamina? At CrossFit Thunder Hill we stay true to the traditional CrossFit philosophy that Coach Greg Glassman began in 2000. We program constantly varied-intense workouts focusing on functional movements. In addition, we include concentrated strength training because strength benefits everyone. CrossFit has gained and maintained its reputation as the most effective fitness programming because it works. There is no need to change the formula.

Is personal attention important to you? At CrossFit Thunder Hill, we keep our classes small. Personal attention is key to your safe development and ability to reach your fitness goals. We cap our classes at 10 people and many classes are staffed by two coaches. We guarantee that you will not be swallowed up by a large group…at CrossFit Thunder Hill you will get the attention you are paying for. By knowing our members personally, our trainers keep you on a path of improvement. Not everyone walks in off of the street with the knowledge or experience to perform most of the movements we perform effectively. Personal attention through small classes makes the difference.

Next, you need to be comfortable. Can you see yourself working out at the box? Is the “vibe” what you are looking for? CrossFit has become so popular because CrossFit boxes are not just a gym, they are a family. At CrossFit Thunder Hill we believe that you will excel where you feel like you belong. Our members span a wide variety of ages, fitness abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, athletic backgrounds and motivations. Our members are moms, dads, lawyers, accountants, mushroom farmers, business owners, administrators, grandparents, students and teachers. CrossFit is the bond that spans our differences and brings us together to support each other in our fitness goals. In addition to our everyday workouts, we constantly have events and special workouts that our members participate in. From themed workouts to charity WODs, we all support and encourage every one of our members to have fun and reach their fitness goals. Check out our Facebook page for pictures of some of our recent workouts and events.

Finally, know your gym. A CrossFit class is only as good as its trainers. How are the classes structured? What are the trainers’ backgrounds? Where did they learn how to coach or train CrossFit classes? Who are the trainers’ mentors? We are a strength biased gym. We feel that you will excel at all of the functional movements if you are strong. This is the philosophy that started CrossFit and we continue it because it works. At CrossFit Thunder Hill, co-owner and trainer John Wallen began CrossFit training in 2009. John became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in 2010, his Olympic Lifting Coaching Certificate in 2013 and also became a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer 2013. John is a CrossFit certified judge and was a judge in the 2013, 2014 & 2015 CrossFit Open and the 2013 & 2014 CrossFit Games Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition. Jill Wallen (co-owner and trainer) became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in 2012, earned her CrossFit Kids certificate in 2013 and Mobility Certificate in 2014. Jill is also a CrossFit certified judge and was a judge in the 2013, 2014 & 2015 CrossFit Open and worked as a scoring assistant in the 2013 & 2014 CrossFit Games Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition. John and Jill have worked and trained with some of the best CrossFit Trainers in the area in order to improve their training and training ability. They bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to every CrossFit Thunder Hill class.
